HAWTHORN Football Club president, Jeff Kennett, unveiled on Saturday night a new look for the Hawks in front of a sell-out audience of over 1300 at the 2007 Peter Crimmins Medal awards night.

The Hawks will play under the new logo in 2008, which displays a strong and determined Hawk, focused and ready to hunt.

The brave new shield represents an unwavering horizon for the club which has re-built itself both on and off the field to be one of the most exciting young and talented teams in the AFL, as well as one of the most professional administrative teams in Australian sport.

In 2007 the Hawthorn Football Club started the first of a five-year partnership with naming rights partner Tasmania.

This partnership, coupled with an exciting brand of attacking football, showed a bright future for the Hawthorn Football Club.

This promising future is reflected in the new design by renowned Australian design firm Cato Purnell Partners.

Cato Purnell have been responsible for some of Australia’s leading icons and brands, including the Commonwealth Bank, Medibank, Macquarie, Channel 7, MSAC Aquatic Centre, VB and Carlton Draught.

In creating a new direction for the Hawks, Cato Purnell Partners, under the guidance of Ken Cato, felt they needed to reflect the focus and determination he had observed within the club so as to communicate that effectively to its members.

“The new shield portrays a sense of determination, pride, and focus. The Hawthorn Football Club is a club on the move. In the design we have hoped to capture the steely resolve it takes to win a premiership. That is the clear ambition of the Hawks,” Mr Cato said.

Jeff Kennett was delighted to present the new logo to the Hawthorn faithful at the 2007 Peter Crimmins Medal.

“Hawthorn Football Club has gone through a transformation in recent years, rebuilding itself to be competitive in all areas of football.

“[Head coach] Alastair Clarkson and his coaching staff have done a terrific job of bringing together an exciting group of young talented footballers, who have shown in 2007 they can play an impressive style of finals footy.

“The new crest for our club symbolises the focus and determination of everyone involved with the Hawks; our players, our staff, our members and supporters, and our board,” Mr Kennett said.

“We have competed under our previous banner for 10 years and the club feels the time is right to regroup and be represented by this brave new look as we continue to grow both on and off the field.”

Hawthorn Football Club logo history
When Hawthorn joined the VFL in 1925, the initials HFC within a circle on a brown and gold flag was introduced as the logo. The club was known as the Mayblooms.

In 1943 the club was christened the Hawks when coach Roy Cazaly sought a more robust image. The new logo depicted a Hawk carrying a football in its talons flying in front of the Hawthorn Football Club flag.

A stronger and simpler version of the Hawk was adopted in 1948, and later depicted in 1952. In 1955 the flying Hawk carrying the football was reintroduced. This popular image became the face of the Hawks through the 1960s and 1970s when Hawthorn won four premierships.

To herald Hawthorn’s progressive publicity push in 1982, the new force of the 80s, a new logo was sought. The club approached Swinburne Institute where a student submitted the winning design, the stylised Hawk head.

This image represented the club’s most successful era with five premierships.

By the mid 1990s the club had endured the merger debate and the logo once more returned to the flying Hawk.

After 100 years at Glenferrie the club moved in 2006 to Waverley and now 2008 will herald a new era of success - under this Hawks logo

Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. The title track, a politically right-on-time environmental rant, steers him back toward "Purple Rain" territory, as does "Lion of Judah" ("Guitar," oddly, doesn't--it's more of a straight-up, shout-it-out modern rocker). The Smurfs - Smurfy good news! Season 1, Volume 1 info

Smurf it on December 4

Warner Bros will release The Smurfs Season 1, Volume 1 on December 4. The 2 disc set will include the first 19 cartoons (345 mins), newly remastered, along with "The Smurfs' Springtime Special" and "Smurfs: The Music Video."

The trailer on the Popeye DVD released this week mentions that the set would include "all 26 episodes from season 1", and shows four discs, but the information we got today says otherwise: 19 cartoons and two discs on a "Season 1, Volume 1" set.

As you can see from the graphic, the suggested retail price is $26.99. We expect to have a press release very soon. Smurf you later!

LOS ANGELES, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Executives from MTV along with sister company Pocket Books (a division of Simon & Schuster) held a press conference in a new venue, Crash Mansion, in downtown Los Angeles to give the media and a few lucky fans a preview of Nikki Sixx's book & soundtrack CD, The Heroin Diaries. The presentation was hosted by Billboard Magazine editor Tamara Conniff, and featured the Motley Crue bassist along with several project partners. In introducing Sixx, Conniff called the book, "The most addictive Rock & Roll take since The Dirt." Sixx then revealed to a packed room of reporters and camera crews that the book was based on the actual diaries he kept during the height of his crippling heroin addiction in the late '80's along with commentary by a host of people including his Crue band-mates, Vanity (his girlfriend at the time), Slash and a host of former associates. "I felt the book wasn't complete without other people's perspective and opinions on what I was like as an addict," said Sixx. "They would tell me if I was full of sh*t." Simon & Schuster Deputy Publisher Anthony Ziccardi, in describing what drew him to the book, called the Heroin Diaries, "The most brutally honest and revealing account of drug abuse ever written." Ziccardi also referenced the unique graphical design of the book by artist and photographer Paul Brown.

Media and guests were also treated to a preview of the accompanying Heroin Diaries soundtrack that Sixx had kept hidden from everyone for months, only revealing it to his management company and label upon delivery of the final book manuscript. To create the soundtrack, Sixx worked with multi-talented musicians/producers DJ Ashba and James Michael, dubbed Sixx: A.M., who drew inspiration from chapters in the book. "We weren't writing for radio," said Sixx. However, radio seems to disagree, according to Clear Channel Director of Rock Programming Jim Richards, who heavily praised the lead single, "Life Is Beautiful" which is already top 40 on the rock radio charts despite only officially being serviced for playlists this week. Richard's referred to the album as a complete body of work and drew comparisons with albums such as "Tommy" (The Who) and "The Wall" (Pink Floyd).

MTV Senior Executive Peter Baron announced that the literary work would be branded as an MTV/VH1 book and supported with a full range of "on channel, off channel and on-line" programming, including heavy support of the music video for "Life Is Beautiful," which he showed to the media. In introducing the clip, which was also directed by Paul Brown, Baron described the video as "visually bringing the book to life," by combining band performance with edgy animation of the book artwork.

Sixx also announced that 25% of all book royalties would go to benefit "Running Wild In The Night," a charity that he began in association with Covenant House, Los Angeles. George Lozano, Executive Director of Covenant House LA, which helps rescue homeless and runaway youth from the street, called Nikki an "inspiration" and "role model" for the kids helped by his organization. To underscore the point, Lozano introduced Irwin Gonzalez, an 18-year old rescued by Covenant House, who said that because of people like Nikki who help provide an alternative to the lifestyle of the street through music, he had been given "the gift of hope." Sixx, a former runaway himself, said he was drawn to the organization because "music gave me the opportunity to get off the streets and gave me something to live for.

Following the press conference, downtown Los Angeles experienced a 115- decibel tumbler when Sixx: A.M. made their world premiere with a live set featuring 5 songs in front of the press and contest winners from radio & MySpace . The thundering sound was accompanied by synchronous visual projections of animation and artwork from the book.

The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star, The Soundtrack was written and produced by Sixx, James Michael and DJ Ashba under the moniker Sixx: A.M., as the dark, sonic companion to the book. The Heroin Diaries soundtrack will be in stores on August 21 via Eleven Seven Music with the book following on September 18 from MTV/VH1.

Some things I love about being single...

Being able to play Motley Crue as loudly as i want as often as i want with no-one telling me to turn it down
being able to shag/snog whomever i want when i want if and when the opportunity arises
going anywhere without checking with someone else first
having to share the vodka with NO-ONE... unless there are visitors (although then you can just pretend you don't have any he he he)
spending your hard earned money on nobody but yourself
not having to listen to someone else's crap ass music tastes
not having to clean up after someone else
making pina colada's and not having to share the best mix ever with anyone but me
being able to sleep uninterrupted by snoring
wearing sexy undies and pj's just for me
going to see as many live bands and lusting after them as often as i want

The Travis Gatt foundation

On the first of June, 4 months after the death of my friend, we will be having a charity foundation dinner to raise money for the Travis Gatt foundation. This will be held at the Werribee Zoo and is a dinner dance. The tickets are $60 and you may purchase tickets from the Melbourne Zoo. I would love it if some of my friends could come however if you are unable to attend but would like to make a donation, the information on how to do that is at the end of this post!!! All proceeds go directly to the Travis Gatt Foundation for the research into XLA.

Travis Gatt had a vision, that through his life and his experiences, he could help others. Travis was born with an immune deficiency called X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA), a condition that affects around 200 people across Australia.

What is XLA..

XLA is a genetic condition, which primarily affects males and is passed from mother to son. women who have the gene for XLA are usually healthy "carriers" of the conditon. In XLA, the body can't make antibodies to fight infection this leads to recurrent sinus and chest infections, and complications such as bronchiectasis (in which the lungs tissues break down) being common. Due to the relative rarity of XLA, not all doctors are aware of its existence. As a result, people with this condition can remain undiagnosed or are diagnosed later in life after damage has already been done.

XLA is managed with regular antibody replacement treatment, antibiotics, and a healthy, smoke free lifestyle - all of which are maintained from diagnosis throughout the life of the affected person. However, this treatment is far from ideal, being expensive, time-consuming and imperfect - even with treatment, those affected are subject to life-threatening infections. There is no cure for XLA.

What I am asking from you...

More research is needed to find better treatments for XLA. In addition, there is a need for patient and community education to raise awareness of XLA, and the condition before it causes damage. Earlier detection means a better outcome for affected individuals and their families. By contributing to this fund, you can help make Travis' Vision a reality.
